Shire Employees Embrace First Global Day of Service
Lexington, Mass.—October 2, 2015 — More than 1,400 global Shire plc employees are joining together in their respective communities for the Company’s first Global Day of Service in aid of dozens of charities and non-profit groups.
The inaugural event continues a long-standing Shire tradition of reaching beyond the corporate campus and into the lives of those in need. Employees from Shire’s principal locations in the U.S. and Europe, as well as 15 other global locations, will take part in over 50 volunteer activities. Children—their lives, their hopes, their possibilities—lie at the heart of nearly every initiative.
Science fairs are being hosted and wildlife habitats are being reclaimed for innovative educational programs in the Greater Boston, Massachusetts area. Educational campuses are being renovated and meals are being packed for underserved children in Wayne, Pennsylvania. In Europe’s largest community daycare facility, located in Dublin, Ireland, a playroom is being revamped, while in Zug, Switzerland, employees are collaborating with established artists to create activity books for children in area hospitals. At a young-adult nursing home based in Basingstoke, England, meanwhile, a sensory garden is being dug to fulfill the dream of expanded horticulture therapy sessions.
“Shire employees have always looked beyond their own lives toward the communities and needs of others, particularly children who are struggling,” said Flemming Ornskov, M.D., Shire CEO. “We’re especially proud of the depth and breadth of the outreach that will benefit our communities for this first Global Day of Service. I’m inspired by the pride Shire people feel as they leave the worlds around them better than they were.”
Dr. Ornskov will kick-off the day with a celebration of the Company’s existing bond with Cotting School, a Lexington-area school focused on enabling students with special needs to achieve their highest potential. Shire will present a $25,000 check for the school to use in support of Project Bridges, a program which offers student placements in local businesses to explore realistic career options while gaining vocational experience and developing social skills.
